About this conversion
Reduce image file sizes with a clear before-and-after comparison. JPG and WebP use adjustable lossy compression. PNG uses lossless optimization when its format and dimensions are unchanged. Keep the original dimensions by default, or choose a maximum long edge. If the result is not smaller, the original file is kept unchanged.
How it works, examples & FAQs
How to compress images
- Choose JPG, PNG or WebP images.
- Choose a compression level, output format and optional smaller dimensions.
- Compare the result, check the actual saving and download the ready files.
Example
A photo can be recompressed at Balanced quality, or resized to a 1920-pixel long edge. A transparent PNG can be optimized losslessly or saved as WebP. The actual saving is measured for each file; no fixed percentage is promised.
Limits and common problems
The combined image input limit is 20 MiB. Browser format support varies. Format conversion does not copy metadata; compression may retain it. Still images only.
Compression is not a metadata-removal tool. Review image appearance before use.
Frequently asked questions
Is image compression lossless?
PNG optimization without resizing preserves pixel values. JPG and WebP recompression can change image details. Resizing reduces pixel dimensions. Review the comparison before downloading.
Can I set a target file size?
Yes. The optional target is a best effort, not a guarantee. For JPG and WebP, the tool tries quality levels down to 35. PNG optimization does not use a quality slider. Choose smaller dimensions or WebP if the target cannot be reached.
What happens if the original is already smaller?
The original bytes, format and dimensions are kept. The result is labeled Original kept, so you do not download a larger file or mistake it for a new compressed export.
Are transparency and metadata preserved?
PNG and WebP outputs support transparency. Explicit JPG output uses the selected white or black background. Compression is not a metadata-removal tool: metadata may change or remain, and an unchanged original retains its metadata. Color profiles and HDR appearance are not guaranteed.
